Amid the anxiety, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission appears to have muddled the election date question even further. Justice Minister Mutula Kilonzo has now rejected the suggestion by the IEBC to have the two coalition principals determine the crucial date. The Minister says he will instead fast track legislation that seeks to change the date to December. Ntv’s Irene Choge has more.

The failure to fix an election date could cost the country asignificant amount of foreign direct investments as it wrongly creates the impression of an unstable political system.German Ambassador to Kenya Margit Hellwig-Boette says the fact that the election date is yet to be fixed is presenting challenges to would-be foreign investors from her country.The election date will be determined by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission subject to the date when the two principals will dissolve the coalition government.

Prime Minister Raila Odinga has hinted at possibility of holding the General Election this year. Raila, who did not disclose the exact date of the elections, says that this years polls will be free and fair. Raila’s sentiments could in many ways break the ice on when the elections will be held with some suggesting March next year after the five-year term of the current parliament ends.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission says it requires up to Ksh 20 billion for the forth-coming general election. The commission, which received the equivalent of two billion shillings from donors earlier today, says registration of voters alone will gobble nearly nine billion shillings. Earlier this morning, the Commission received some 23 million dollars to finance the ongoing review of boundaries. The Commission says the additional time will allow it to organize credible elections.
