Amid the anxiety, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission appears to have muddled the election date question even further. Justice Minister Mutula Kilonzo has now rejected the suggestion by the IEBC to have the two coalition principals determine the crucial date. The Minister says he will instead fast track legislation that seeks to change the date to December. Ntv’s Irene Choge has more.

Prime Minister Raila Odinga has hinted at possibility of holding the General Election this year. Raila, who did not disclose the exact date of the elections, says that this years polls will be free and fair. Raila’s sentiments could in many ways break the ice on when the elections will be held with some suggesting March next year after the five-year term of the current parliament ends.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission is hitting the ground running following a court ruling that pushes the election date beyond August. Earlier this morning, the Commission received some 23 million dollars to finance the ongoing review of boundaries. The Commission says the additional time will allow it to organize credible elections.
