Election troubles in Alexandria

Posted on November 28th, 2010 by admin in election | No Comments »

2 Election troubles in AlexandriaEgyptian courts have ordered the cancellation of Sunday’s parliamentary election in 24 districts in the city of Alexandria.

This is after the government ignored orders to reinstate opposition and independent candidates.

The Muslim Brotherhood is competing for a third of Egypt’s parliamentary seats and was founded in Alexandria – but has officially been banned in Egypt for over half a century.

The Brotherhood has built its support by providing an alternative welfare system, and the ban adds to its appeal.

But critics say its main goal is the same as that of all other parties — to win power.

Al Jazeera’s Jacky Rowland reports from Alexandria.

Violence mars Egypt elections

Posted on November 26th, 2010 by admin in election | No Comments »

2 Violence mars Egypt electionsEgypt’s parliamentary elections will take place on Sunday, and its human rights centre says at least four people have already been killed, and dozens injured, in political violence.

The biggest opposition group, the Muslim Brotherhood, says the government is using security forces to attack its members.

Egypt’s government has rejected several calls to allow international monitors to observe this year’s elections, making it difficult to find out exactly who is behind the violence and how it will affect the outcome.

Al Jazeera’s Jamal Elshayyal reports from Alexandria.
